The Eyre Affair - Jasper Fforde

Thursday Next works for the LitTech branch of the Special Operatives, and is good at her job. Thursday has a nemesis with the name of Hades, the third most wanted man in the world. He has got his hands on a portal that allows him to enter fictional stories and poems and take characters out, bringing them into the real world. What is he hoping to achieve with this, and can Thursday return Jane Eyre to Rochester before it is too late?

This is a great read, with a brilliant set of characters and a plot that moves at a steady pace. I personally thought it to be really engaging, and I enjoyed reading it. I think I might be in love with Thursday, as a main character it is nice to see a strong female lead. I also liked the secondary characters, such as Bowden and Thursday’s dad who added some comedy to the proceedings.

Hades is also a fantastic antagonist, he is suitably diabolical, without delving too far into the pantomime villain. He is most definitely a threat. However, I did feel that he may have been dispatched a little too conveniently and quickly at the end of the book which was annoying, I was hoping that he would become a consistent part of the series, sort of a Moriarty character. However, I think the fact that there is always a chance that Jack could come back would be interesting.

I loved the plot and explanation of how the stories can be changed on paper if someone where to enter the original manuscript. I am looking forward to seeing more world building and seeing how this alternative universe works and develops.

However, I am becoming more and more annoyed with the love triangles that keep appearing in literature, although in this case it was not really a triangle, more like a line with a potential extra sideline that is never fully explored. I honestly think that she ended up with the wrong man at the end of the book. I am hoping that this changes in the series as I believe our Thursday can, and should, do better.

Otherwise, a lovely speed read that was enjoyable and a good introduction to a series.
